Data

Data and licences

Where every layer on the map comes from, and the licence it is under.

Open data

Every source, with its licence.

Collisions come from STATS19, the police record of injury collisions. Streetworks come from Street Manager, and traffic counts and bus data from the Department for Transport. Each one is listed below with its licence, ready to quote in a committee report or a freedom of information reply.

What is free, and what is not

Open data that the map displays is free to anyone, and stays under its own licence. The figures Auroute works out from it are ours, and come with an authority or police account.

The licences

Auroute is not endorsed by any of the organisations named on this page.

From councils

Orders, closures and diversions are published by the council that makes them. A council's structures register, its traffic surveys and the abnormal load notifications sent to it all stay theirs. Where a notification links to a route (on AB Haulier Routing, in a KML file or on Google Maps), the route is read from that link and kept with the notification.

Ours

Modelled traffic and speeds, bus delays, the bus routes (each drawn along the roads from its timetable's stops) and the bus services on each street, the properties on each street (counted from OS Open Linked Identifiers, which links each property's UPRN to its street's USRN), the street collision rankings and the crime levels and trends are © 2026 Auroute Ltd. They come with an authority or police account, under an agreement with us. We make them from the open data above and from councils' own surveys. How they are worked out is on the how the estimates work page, and for crime on the how the crime layers work page.

The modelled speeds on some motorways and main A roads also draw on vehicle speeds measured from satellite pictures: Adamiak, M., Fendrich, S., Psotta, J. and Zipf, A. (2026), Vehicle speed dataset for the major European road network derived from Sentinel-2 imagery (Heidelberg University), https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21484806. Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2022–2026. They are not shown on the map on their own.
